There is a photo exhibition at Scandinavian Photo Gallery in Malmö, Sweden by Bob Bovin. The photographs cover fifty years of documentary humor photographs, including signs and fun situations.
Please make a visit to the exhibition when you make a stop in Malmö. It is situated at Östra Förstadsgatan 44. It will go on until the 20th of April.

Art in Chemistry an exhibition opened at the Departemnt of Chemistry, Lund University

The exhibition consist of scientific photos and illustrations selected by Max Liljefors (associate professor in Art History and Visual Studies at Lund University) for their esthetic values. The exhibition was organized by Communications Officer Cecilia von Anhold and Professor Emeritus Jan-Olov Bob Bovin.
The exhibition is a part of the European Chemistry Year 2011 at the Department of Chemistry. Please have a look at the photos from the vernissage here.

Back from the ice of Svalbard

We have visited the wilderness of Svalbard with the motor ship Stockholm again. The trip included the sight of 11 polar bears and most the other mammals typical of this arctic region. It is always interesting to visit this part of the world and it is never the same sights. I had never before seen a polar bear playing with objects. After two years of eating on a whale carcass the polar bears have to dive down to find food. A young polar bear did not had the skill to do that and played instead with the baleen of the whale.

Wild life at Upper Ugglefors, Sweden

We spend our summers at my grand fathers house built 1917. I am now the old man of the house and is only doing service as playing with the grand children of my daughter. We play at 2000 square meters of garden and forest. In a photographers point of view it happens always a lot. This summer, with plenty of sun shine, was no exception.

The picture above is my favorite. Really a David and Goliath situation.

The red apple

The winter of 2010 has been unusually hard. Not since 1943 the average temperature of January has been so low, according to the SMHI. The global warming is not showing up this year one may notice, but on the other hand the temperature of one winter is not telling anything about the trend for temperature change since the industrial revolution started around 1880. The small birds are no doubt having a hard time to find food when the snow is deep and the temperature is below -20 C. It is a good idea to leave some of the apples on the tree in a year like this, to give the birds something to eat. In our garden in Riddarhyttan we always keep some. This year the red apples were popular, and also giving the photographers a nice color in the photos. Here is a photo play of some of his images.

Photo exhibition at Östgötland County Museum 28th of February

The photo exhibition, the Vasa school 1959 (Vasaskolan 1959), by Bob Bovin will be opened at the 28th of February at Östgötland County Museum (Östgötlands länsmuseum) in Linköping. Östgötland County Museum is one of the oldest and most comprehensive county museums in Sweden. It is located in a functional style building from 1939 in the 'cultural center' of Linköping, near the cathedral and the castle.

All trees, including the tropical rainforest, on our planet are essential for the life process. One small step on the way to save the environment on earth is to maintain as many trees as possible in the biosphere.

Photo exhibition at the Mikaels church in Ryd, Linköping

Bob Bovin will show pictures taken 1959 at his school in Linköping. The school, named Vasaskolan, was a junior high school.
The exhibition starts at 27th of September at the church coffee and it goes on for a month.

Tio fotografer (Ten photographers) at Lund museum of art

Fifty years ago ten Swedish photographers nailed a photo exhibition in Lund. At that time photography was not considered art and the exhibition suggested that. The ten photographers worked in several areas and covered fashion to documentary. One could say that all belonged to the best of photo at that time in Sweden. All became leading in their field of photography and several went into cinema production later on, beside work with still photography. The most recognised internationally became Lennart Olsson with very graphic images of bridges and he is represented with several images at Museum of modern art in New York.

Hans Hammarsköld seen here talks to friends about one of his most well known images.

In December 2008 an exhibition is put together with the most important images and books and movies made of the members of the group. It is a fantastic exhibition, showing the summery of Swedish top photography of the second part of the 19-hundred. Today only two of the members in the group are alive, Olsson and Hans Hammarsköld . The later gave a wonderful presentation of the group in an evening lecture at the museum.

The members of the group travelled all over world and came home with documentaries for news papers and books. One of the real globetrotters was Rune Hassner, later the most well known photo historians of in Sweden, and many of his photographs from Africa were highly thought of in Sweden. One of my all time favourite photographs is shown at the exhibition. The photograph, seen below, is showing a little boy with his wheel toy standing in the front of a Chevrolet car. It can be seen, even today, as a symbol of life on earth with it global warming aspect.

Back home from Snow Hill

The winter in Antarctica has been hard. The ice situation has not been so difficult since the beginnging of the 1970. Our ice breaker Khlebnikov had difficulties to reach a position close to the Emperor Penguin rockery south of Snow Hill. We had to fly helicopter for more than 30 minutes to reach the rockery. It was placed in a wunderful ice-landscape of infrosen ice-bergs in the winter ice. We spent two days with the penguins, both with wunderful sun shine, but hard winds. The wind corrected temperture was close to -20C. The opportunities to take photos of the life of the rockery was limitless, but time was to short. Ingrid and I ended up with more than 5000 images. On the 4th of November Ingrid and I will take off for the other side of the earth. We will visit the Snow Hill island with help of an ice breaker.

When we are back to home we will go the the Scandinavian Photo AB Gallery and hang our best pictures from the visit to the Polar bears at Svalbard, this year. It will be wonderful to have a chance to show, it will be on show between 26th of November to the end on January 2008, what we experienced in th cold north. The polar bears living near the north pole of the earth, will be important to study in order to understand the progress of a possible global warming. Ingrid and Bob Bovin took part in a photographic expedition to the north east ice landscape of Svalbard in September the year 2007. The ship, named Stockholm, with captain Per and his staff, made an unforgettable visit in the pack ice possible where they could see more than 20 polar bears in the different situations and weather. This is a collection of images, selected from more than 6000, which can be used to illustrate the situation of living for the polar bears to day.

Master photographer Georg Oddner at Tomarp, Sweden

The Swedish master photographer Georg Oddner is showing a retrospective exhibition at the Tomarps royal farm in the south of Sweden. Some of the pictures are exhibited in the garden as giant prints, spectacular posted with the farmland in the background.

Oddner was at young age jazz musician, but went in the 50-ies to New York as assistent to Richard Avedon.

After the time in NY Oddner started off as a photographer in the south of Sweden and became a very prominent photographer in advertising. He also travelled all over the world and many of his grand pictures comes from all over the globe.

Oddner is one of the most famous photographers in Sweden and this exhibition is showing that.

It is well worth to visit the beautiful place of Tomarp, not only for the photographs, but also for the possibility to see the stork family on the roof top of the little castle.

My hotel, Sanford House

The area around the Arlington is rather typical south west small town. Right angel streets and lots of car sales. The Division road all the way to Fort Worth, a modern town with a living center, is showing up a rather nostalgic US. I live at Bread and Breakfast, Sanford house, in a very nice old setting. Good breakfast and clean room. Antic rug in the bath room!

I visited a very nice art festival in Fort Worth with very high standard craftsman ship. Nice photo exhibitions, beautiful silver smith work and interesting paintings. The center of the town was modern with shops, bars and old and new houses. I recommend a visit. I had lunch in a book store.

Here you can have a look at some of the "signs in situations" I always look for when I travel.

I know that Americans are very clear, but I did not know that they had to tell that a door is a door.

It was impossible to get a flight out of Newark International airport on the 15th of April. The rain was falling like a wall over New York. The streets flooding and it was cold. A ferry would be better to use passing over the street.
Most flights were cancelled, so also mine, and I was standby in the afternoon. Placed on 5th place on the standby list I was hoping for a chance to escape out of NY. At the gate waiting in overtime with other fellow passenger suddenly a rugged fellow with two suite cases turned up and showed am id. He was quickly passed in to the plane before all waiting. My neighbor waiting fellow said it was a US marshal. He was ready to take out all mass destruction items.

I was glad to get an over night room at Marriott that night.

House of Culture (Kulturhuset), Stockholm

In the spring of 2007 Scandinavia is the place of two great photo exhibitions. The masters of American art photography Sally Mann and Cindy Sherman are on display in Stockholm and Copenhagen. Sally Mann is shown in the House of Culture (Kulturhuset) and Cindy Sherman is presenting a retrospective exhibition in the prestigious Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, outside Copenhagen.

One month after the opening of the Sally Mann exhibition, I shared the photos with many other visitors, even if the rain was pouring down outside the rather ugly modern building of House of Culture (Kulturhuset), formerly a provisory building of the Swedish parliament.

The exhibition has stirred up a great deal of interest and nation wide art TV programs have been devoted to the pictures and the life of Sally Mann. The art critiques of the press have given many points of views. The photo press and the internet have had a lot of open discussions.

All the photos of the different projects are very well exhibited and in the entrance hall is a TV interview running. The 24 large prints of the famous series – Immediate Family (1992) – are causing the most attention. The images of Sally’s children, photographed with a master’s hand in a dream like environment, are the ones that provoked the American public so deeply years ago. One of the pictures – The Three Graces — of 1994, has never been shown in public in the US, but has been part of the TV programs and news paper articles here in Sweden. in sunshine back light. A picture of the most natural part of life, any human being and animal will do that daily, but never the less the one picture that has been discussed most on the inter net here in Sweden. May be this image is searching the accepted border line of art of photography. Any religious argument telling us that we should not show this kind a natural event feels kind of stupid. Should we be provoked by showing pictures of what any mammal is doing? We are accepting to see the animals peeing in the nature films. Is the human being superior and standing over nature? Of course not, we are a part of nature, as Sally Mann’s latest project – What remains—is showing. The reason why Sally Mann publishes – The Three Graces— in Scandinavia is not clear, but here it will never provoke anyone enough to be tested against the law of child pornography.

The pictures of – Immediate Family (1992) – appeal to most everyone, because we all have our pictures, in the head or in the photo album, of a time we like or dislike. The situations of the images are in our mind and they are some where between reality and unreality. The large prints shown here are printed beautifully, and masterly, with a wonderful gray scale holing out the lightning light parts of the prints. Maybe that’s why the images open my mind for a dream like state.

The landscape photography project --Deep South (1997)—is by no means part of traditional landscaping. The pictures are recorded with an old home made big glass plate technology. Some of the solutions even include brown tea. Old lenses have given diffuse parts of the prints, and hair and cracks in the emulsions gives a strange reality of the dreamlike south country side. The branches of the trees tangles to get hold of you or your mind. Once again the spectator walks into a forest or landscape of his own, it is not Sally’s intention or mind that sets the role of what one thinks or sees, --she maybe guides you. Some of the large landscape are mounted on the walls side by side of windows, moving the visitors attention to view out over a central place of Stockholm, --Sergels square. The drug dealer’s square, and the center of big shops of modern business life. On one of the buildings wall shows an enormous print of Madonna in the cloth design of H&M. The view could not be more filled of contrast!

In the center of Sally Mann’s exhibition are big format portraits of Sally’s now grown up kids. All images are part of the project –Faces (2003). These are close up portraits, only showing parts of their faces, surprisingly stiff and without obvious contact, like a dead. The vast difference in size of the face in the image and in your own face hindered my mind to get contact with the content of the image. I just felt so small, like in front of the death.

14 000 Cranes at the Lake Hornborga in Sweden

Cranes at lake Hornborga, Sweden

The small lake Hornborga, situated in southern Sweden, 150 km north east of the town Gothenborg, is the target of cranes coming to Sweden each spring. Visitors to Sweden, in the beginning of April, should not miss this top event of the nature.

Stay over night in the small motel named Ålleberg, after the mountain near by, because the restaurant serves the best of meat balls, with potatoes and lingon-berry.

The visit to the cranes must start before 6 AM and the raise of the sun. More than 14 000 cranes come in from the shore side of the lake, where they rest in the night. They will land on the south side of the like, where food is supplied.

The dancing of the cranes is so wonderful to lock at that you will stay until 8 PM, when the cranes move back out to the shore sides for the night sleep out of the reach of predators.

Now its time for you to move back to the motel and have a beer, food and a good night sleep.

The modern digital cameras are fantastic tools for taking photos of this early morning event. The photo above is recorded with a Canon Eos 20D and the 100-400 L IS zoom lens. I used the 1.4X extender so the effective focal length became almost 900 mm. With the ISO 800 the exposure was f/8 at 1/30 sec. The good old analog film camera would never catch a photo like that.

This year the eagle owl broods the eggs on the same cliff hang as the year 2005. The mother is resting well even if the big stone-colliery is very noisy blow.

A family of Tawny owl is living in the park close to the Dome in Lund. The two small chicks can bee seen in daytime and has been very popular to visit. Groups of small pre-school kids and school children can be seen studying the sleeping chicks, very close up. The small chick fall down from time to time and helping hands put them up in the tree again.

I do not know much about birds, but to my surprise the small chicks have very clearly blue eyelids.

The first weeks of April, each year, more than 10000 cranes feed at the south end of the lake Hornborgarsjoen in Sweden. This is one of true wonders of nature in Scandinavia. People, bird lovers, come from the north of Europe to see the dance of cranes. Here is one couple performing the dance which is going on for up half a minute. A Lapwing is just landed, but on it’s bally.

The mind lives in one day in a span of many hundred years. I had a “coffee latte” in a small coffee shop near the University park today. Outside the door a group man dogged a deep whole in the road, probably for a new heat pipe or broad band. The big machine, from Japan, had dug down about two meter. Coming out from the shop I could see one of the workers picking up a piece of a skeleton. Yes, some one, living in our more than 1000 year old town, came up to light again. He or she must have lived here many hundred years ago. At that time, one did not had to worry much about the same problems we have today, like global air pollution, a theme spread by the news the same day. The oil reserves are most likely reaching a peak 2031, and according to the experts, it all will be out of the ground year 2060. The picture above than illustrate the future and the past. Back to the use of wood?!

Lens history ?!!

In the south-west corner of the streets Aobadori Avenues and Haigashi Ichibanciodori Avenues, in Sendai, Japan, there was, and it may be still is, a small photo shop. It was selling new, but most of all used cameras and lenses. In the opposite corner there was a bakery selling Danish pastry, yeas it is true -- in Japan. The pastry smelled wonderfully and reminded me of south Scandinavia, where I live. I stopped at both the shops many times, on my way to work at the university, and admired the show of old cameras and the taste of the Danish.

The photo shop was small and simple, but exhibited advanced Japanese and European cameras. At that time I was interested in the rangefinder camera Canon 7 and the shop had several. I talked to the owner of the shop many times, yeas he spoke good English. I asked finally if it was possible to find the CANON 50mm f/0.95 lens in good shape. He promised to find me one. He told me he was especially proud of that lens, because he was part of its construction. At that time, in the 50-ties, he was engineer at Canon and constructed the mechanism of equal distance between the aperture stops 0.9--1,4--2--2,4-- . It was the first lens of Canon with that property, according to the man in the shop; I do not know his name. Take a look at some of the older lenses at the Canon museum; like the Serenar 35mm f/2.8 I from 1951, and you can see that it is not equal distance between the f-stops.

After more than a year, I was told through a friend, that the lens, and a Canon 7s II (only 4000 were manufactured 1967-68) to go with it, was ready for delivery. How much?? – about $1000 for it all.

I have always wondered why there has been no tests (probably the only one missed), on the net, of all the 1.0 lenses (three out there? -- two Canon and one Leitz).

Focus, so what?

Sharp photos, is that what makes a great shot? As we all know there are endless comments on what makes a sharp photo, all over the net, and almost all tests are about more pixels and the perfect lens. Looking for a site focused on the content and interpretation of images--- I wish there are some. Please let me know.

At least I can be happy about an image -- even if it is a none sharp one. Just take a look at photo, by the world famous Henri Cartier-Bresson, published in the book by Aperture 1976 (ISBN 0-89381-000-2) on page 25, there is a photo titled --Arena at Valencia, Spain, 1933--.

It is obviously a none focued photo, but so open for symmetry and thoughts. Just look for the circles!

In most situations of there is limited time for recording the moment you see and sometime you shot from the hip as in the situation below. A sunny day at Grand Canaria, on the way back to the hotel, I got the eyes on a situation giving a chance to thoughts. The camera, Leica M2, had a normal lens and I did not focused before shooting. It is not sharp!! But may be worth sharing??
